Cakewalk is the largest yacht built in the U.S. since the 1930’s by Derecktor Shipyards of Bridgeport, CT. Portable, durable and convenient is what
Derecktor Shipyards of Bridgeport, CT was looking for in temporary lighting as they began the anti-corrosion coating and fairing of Cakewalk. Measuring 281 feet long, and 2,950 tons Cakewalk is the largest yacht built in the U.S. since the 1930’s, and possibly the largest yacht built in the U.S. ever if measured by volume.
When building a vessel of such size, unforeseen challenges arise.

Derecktor was in need of temporary lighting to be placed in the scaffolding outside of Cakewalk as the build and design team prepared to start the anti-corrosion coating and fairing of the yacht.
A total of 1,686 sq. ft. of illumination was required. The lighting needed to run the length of the ship – 281” long, on three levels of scaffolding, and both sides of the vessel.
Derecktor approached K&H Industries, a leading manufacturer of temporary lighting and power products in Buffalo, NY for a solution.
John Herc, vice president of sales and marketing at K&H, understood there were unique circumstances and went to Bridgeport to meet with the design and build team of Cakewalk.
“K&H has always offered customized solutions to its customers. I wanted to see the environment the lights were going to be set up in, understand the natural light, and the available power sources so I could make the proper recommendation.”
After visiting with the Cakewalk team, Herc recommended customized version of K&H’s Quad Light. Derecktor decided to go with a combination of K&H’s 32” long Quad Lights with 25’ of SOOW 12/3 cord, and another group of Quad units with 100’ of SOOW 12/3 cord. The Quad Lights with the additional cord are being used as the lead light in the daisy chain of each row of scaffolding.
K&H Quad Lights with feed-through outlets make them a frequent lighting choice for temporary tents and shelters, OEM and manufacturing facilities.
